Gandalf the Grey

I started this model by watching the Fellowship of the Ring again to decide which scene to depict the model in. I narrowed it down to either Bilbo's party, the Council of Elrond, the mountain pass or Moria. The only scene in which Gandalf wears his hat is on the mountain pass, and I didn't feel that I'd be able to remove the hat and resculpt the hair well enough to attempt the other scenes (at some point, I intend to do just that and model Gandalf at the Council of Elrond).

I painted Gandalf's robes by painting them grey and then shading them with repeated black washes. Unfortunately, this meant that I didn't highlight the robes enough and they're quite dark. Gandalf's sword was painted using an online photo reference, and the model was painted based on a still of the scene from the movie. The base was made by repeatedly adding more snow, which is (I believe) a mixture of PVA glue and talcum powder, and the snow is heavier at the front, as Gandalf has already walked through the snow at the back. Talcum powder was also sprinkled across the model to represent the snow storm, and was inspired by the models of David Rodriguez.

I entered the model into Golden Demon 2010, but it failed to finalise.
